Supporting Seniors During Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Every October, we recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month by honoring victims, patients and survivors of this disease. We promote ways to support those who are affected by breast cancer, and we spread information and awareness in order to mitigate the damage caused.

As home companions serving Manatee County, the professionals at Grateful Heart always keep this cause at the forefront of our minds. We frequently see how breast cancer and breast cancer treatment can affect even the strongest, most independent seniors. And we know how much daily assistance, not to mention emotional support and encouragement, and improve quality-of-life and their overall prognosis.

In one of our most important roles as companions, we offer hope.

Here we’re talking a little more about how breast cancer affects seniors, how home companions can help, and what you can do to shine positive light on breast cancer patients.

Breast Cancer Statistics for Seniors

While popular culture often frames the tragedy of breast cancer around younger patients, the disease is also devastating for the older population. According to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, “The older we are, the more likely abnormal changes will occur in our cells. When many of these changes occur, cancer can develop.”

  • The median age for a breast cancer diagnosis is 62. That means as many women over that age are diagnosed as younger.
  • At least a third of new breast cancer diagnoses are for women who are over 65, and women over 70 account for the vast majority of that subset.
  • Women over 70 account for more than half of breast cancer deaths annually. That’s 21,000-plus seniors every year who die of breast cancer.

The Toll Breast Cancer Takes on Seniors

We often discuss the toll aging can take on the body and mind. Even the healthiest seniors can suffer from isolation and sedentary habits that quickly spiral into more serious issues.

When you add a serious diagnosis like breast cancer, the risks multiply exponentially.

  • Consider the psychological toll of a major cancer diagnosis. This alone can be staggering to someone at any age. When you account for isolation, a common problem for seniors, the emotional impact of breast cancer can seem almost insurmountable.
  • The pain and exhaustion of breast cancer treatment also wreak havoc on seniors, people who may have already been dealing with decreased energy, limited mobility, and other physical ailments.
  • Even the day-to-day toll of doctor’s appointments and medications becomes overwhelming. And unfortunately, if these tasks aren’t performed, the prognosis is even worse.

Home Companions Bring Aid and Hope

In the face of something as daunting as breast cancer, every little victory helps. Home companions can help deliver victories on multiple fronts.

  • Emotional and social support. Never underestimate the power of another human face, a friendly person who shows up and interacts with you. We see this power every day.
  • Task management. Home companions also provide guidance and stability through the seemingly unending slog and sometimes confusion schedule of appointments, medications, mealtimes and more.
  • Around-the-house help. As pain and exhaustion set in, everyday chores will begin to pile up. Home companions can help to ensure that the home is maintained. Not only does this create a safer environment; it also bolsters emotions and keeps surroundings comfortable and familiar.

We always strive to deliver an improved quality-of-life for our clients. When it comes to seniors with breast cancer, we know that even the smallest bright spots can illuminate much more hope and much better long-term prognoses.
